Resources for Meeting Planners: Patti's Professional Experience


Co-founder, The Circle Project, Asheivlle & Seattle, 2005-present.

Consulting, research and writing, facilitation, strategic development, and experiential diversity and leadership training for nonprofit and corporate executives and organizations. Projects include:

  • Co-founder of The Circle Project, offering experiential and multidisciplinary approaches to diversity and inclusion issues in organizations and communities
  • Creation of diversity strategies for national nonprofit organizations, corporations & educational institutions
  • Design and delivery of diversity and leadership training, both online and face-to-face
  • Facilitation of Board strategic planning, appreciative inquiry conferences, and global meetings
  • Delivery of keynote addresses on global leadership, cultural difference, and diversity

Faculty, Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication, Portland, OR, 1996-present. As part of an international faculty, develop and teach weeklong courses, including:

  • “Understanding Cultures in Global Corporations”
  • “Developing Diversity Strategies in Nonprofits and Educational Institutions”
  • “Using Storytelling to Lead Change and Diversity Efforts”
  • “Building Effective Diverse Teams”
  • “Humor and Play as Intercultural Tools”

Vice President, International and Diversity Programs, Society for Human Resource Management, Alexandria, VA, 1989-1996.

  • Launched organizational divisions, including the Institute for International HR and award-winning Diversity Initiative, for the world’s largest HR association, with over 200,000 members
  • Created and launched publications and other member benefits such as the award-winning MOSAICS diversity newsletter, International HR newsletter, and WorldLink newsletter
  • Developed educational programming including the Diversity Train the Trainer Certification program, International HR Certification Program, and National Diversity Conference
  • Developed and led more than 50 bilateral meetings and national and international conferences
  • Established SHRM as headquarters for the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA). Personally awarded WFPMA Presidential Medal in 1991 for this work
  • Acted as staff liaison for International Board and committees of the Society

Director, In-Country Experiential Education, Semester at Sea International Education Program, University of Pittsburgh, One-semester appointment, 1988.

  • Responsible for implementation of over 60 experiential education programs in 10 countries
  • Acted as liaison between Semester at Sea faculty, host country faculty, and students
  • Created orientation and educational materials for each country visited

Director, International Programs, American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Washington, D.C., 1985-1988

  • Led international activities of association representing presidents and chancellors of U.S.state colleges and universities
  • Developed international linkages and campus teacher development programs on global issues
  • Launched two newsletters
  • Created and administered a national Japanese Studies Teacher Education program
  • Acted as liaison to International Board

Program Director, International Council on Education for Teaching, Washington, DC, 1984-85.

  • Responsible for USAID-funded program designed to bring international educators to the United States for intensive internships with counterparts.
